MASS. - Motorists and trick-or-treaters are being advised by AAA Northeast to pay attention to their surroundings to ensure a safe and fun night.

Director of Public and Government Affairs Mary Maguire says motorists need to pay attention to children walking around the neighborhood.

“On Halloween, motorists need to be especially vigilant between the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight, when pedestrians are the most vulnerable,” Maguire said. “Slowing down, and watching for trick-or-treaters who may cross between cars or mid-block may save a life.”

Motorists should avoid using neighborhood shortcuts through residential areas and watching for where trick-or-treaters are more likely to be walking. Driving slowly can prevent possible injury to the trick-or-treaters.

All drivers should refrain from driving under the influence. According to AAA Northeast, one-third of all motor vehicle deaths result in an average of one death every 45 minutes.

Parents and children can ensure a safer Halloween too by developing a plan and sticking together as the group walks from house to house. Children should avoid walking across the street without looking both ways.

Wearing costumes with bright colors, using reflective tape and carrying a flashlight during the night can help prevent a motor vehicle accident.
