SHREWSBURY, Mass. - It was a busy Saturday afternoon for Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis and his team as they hosted their annual senior picnic in Shrewsbury.
Evangelidis says they received so many submissions, they had to cap entry into the picnic this year, welcoming more than 1,200 seniors into SAC Park. In years prior, seniors would join the sheriff for a meal. But last year, they created a new drive-through model, handing out car washes, barbecue and goody bags from nearly two dozen local businesses and organizations.
"This is I think the largest picnic for seniors in the country, at least in New England," Evangelidis said. "It's a sellout crowd. We have so many donations to celebrate with our seniors across Worcester County. They've come from everywhere. I've met folks from Gardner, Worcester, Southborough, Southbridge, Milford, everywhere. It's an incredible day, we're so happy, it's beautiful weather. The idea is to celebrate together as a community."
This year also featured a few raffles, with some lucky winners taking home Worcester Bravehearts tickets.
