WORCESTER, Mass. - Picketers outside the offices of congressional leaders across the country Friday called for action to reduce the threat of nuclear war.

In Worcester, people picketed outside of Rep. Jim McGovern's office. The group 'Center for Nonviolent Solutions' said McGovern has been supportive of their efforts.

The demonstration is part of the nationwide campaign 'Defuse Nuclear War,' which calls attention to the risks countries face with the use of nuclear weapons.

"In this campaign, in 'Defuse Nuclear War,' the asks are very specific," Claire Schaeffer-Duffy, program director for the Center for Nonviolent Solutions, said. "One is no first use, just change that stance. It's not calling for immediate elimination of all weapons, it's just commit yourself that we will not use them first. And the second, which has support from many military personnel, is take weapons off hair trigger alert."

The picketing comes after President Joe Biden's comments about the treat of Russia using nuclear weapons and comes ahead of the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
