PETERSHAM, Mass. - It's an Olympic sport with a huge following. No, it isn't track, swimming or even gymnastics. It's curling! Some people spent the weekend competing in a curling tournament in Central Massachusetts.

This weekend marked the third annual Shay's Shenanigans Mixed Doubles Bonspiel at the Petersham Curling Club. Curling is a team sport played on ice dating back to 16th century Scotland, where two teams take turns to slide stones made of granite towards a target.

This year, teams from Belfast, Maine, Rochester, New York, Pennsylvania, and around Massachusetts took part. Leadership at the club says their membership began seeing a boost when they began Shay's Shenanigans. They say the Olympics helped bring in more people as well.

Teams of competitors ages 15 and up played multiple games over the last few days. It's something almost everyone can do.

"The camaraderie of the sport is what bring a lot of people back," said Petersham Curling Club president Sherri Dungan. "It's some of the best comradery I've experienced in my lifetime. There's also, if you like sports, there's a lot of strategy involved and actually there's a lot of exercise involved. As soon as you get out there and you start sweeping from one end of the ice to the other and you're sweeping hard, it's a pretty good cardio exercise. So, it has got a little bit of everything."

The club says they are one of only four dedicated curling clubs in operation in Massachusetts. They have been around since 1960.
