UXBRIDGE, Mass. – Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., is one of a handful of lawmakers in Congress calling for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
McGovern said he condemns Hamas' attack earlier this month, calling it a violation of international law, but he also said he has concerns about Israel’s incursion into Gaza.
"Gaza is no bigger than two Washington D.C.s put together,” McGovern said. “Over two million people live there. A majority are children. Children are being killed. That is wrong. They have nothing to do with it, because by the way, Hamas is not Palestinians, and the Palestinians are not Hamas. Cutting off water, medical supplies and food, that is a violation of international humanitarian law as well."
McGovern said he is also concerned about Americans who are still in the Middle East, including constituents of his that are in Gaza. He said he is “beyond frustrated” with his efforts to get the State Department involved to help.
"A couple and their young baby from Medway who I represent are stuck in Gaza,” McGovern said. “They are worried about their own safety. We need to get them out. What I’m being told by the State Department is that with all that's going on, it's not safe for them to leave. Well, it's not safe for them to stay there.
“Let's get a cease-fire, get them and other Americans, and other foreign nationals out before it's too late. I'm worried that this ground war is going to make it impossible for them to leave."
McGovern said the family has run out of milk for their baby and their needs to be greater urgency towards getting Americans out of Gaza. He said he and his staff has been on the phone with the State Department daily, but with no luck so far.
