BELCHERTOWN, Mass. - A Western Massachusetts school district is facing a more than $2M deficit and parents and educators want to make sure people in town know the impact it could have on the future.

The Belchertown Education Association said the $2.1M deficit could lead to the elimination of about 25 positions and increased fees.

They said the district already eliminated nearly 17 positions this school year.

Association President Fran Frederick said something needs to give for students to get the education they deserve.

"We cannot continue to cut and cut and cut and not think that there's not going to be a loss of the things that people here cherish,” said Frederick. “I'm very, very concerned that the reputation that has been hard fought to earn for many years, our town is trying to brand itself right now. They've actually hired people to brand it and the branding right now is “we don't believe in education.” The branding right now is “we don't fund education.” And that, I don't think is the brand that we want."

The school committee chair said revenue continuously doesn’t match costs and the district is at a breaking point.

She said something must be done because the larger and steadier cuts are not sustainable.
