WORCESTER, Mass. - A Worcester bakery is celebrating Mardi Gras with a sweet treat.

The European Bakery and Pastry on Millbury Street was busy Tuesday selling paczkis.

The polish treat is like a donut, but the bakery said they're richer because they use more eggs and less sugar.

They typically sell about 50 to 100 on a normal day, but closer to 2,000 on Fat Tuesday.

Owner Casey Griswold said they were traditionally made to use up ingredients before Lent.

"Traditionally it was a way to use up all the sweet stuff in the house,” said Griswold.

I think traditionally they were fried in lard, which we obviously don't do here. We're a kosher bakery. It was a way to use everything up before Lent. So, you know, the sugar, the fats, stuff like that."

Griswold said they're busier on Fat Thursday which was last week.

They sell closer to 10,000 paczkis then.
