WORCESTER, Mass. - The attorney general is weighing in on the recent immigration enforcement crackdown in the state.
Nearly 1,500 people in Massachusetts have been detained as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement continues what they’re calling a crackdown in Massachusetts.
Attorney General Andrea Campbell said people need to know what’s at stake.
“We are inserting ourselves on these immigration cases, not just because what we're seeing from ICE patrolling our communities is not to advance public safety. Ittruly is about fear mongering." Campbell said. "And the example of the high school student in Milford, really, I think lifts this up. This is a high school student, a part of the community, an athlete, a great student, and just picked up by ICE for reasons we still don't understand.”
Just two days before 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes da Silva’s arrest, Campbell’s office issued "Know Your Rights" guidelines on ICE for immigrants, families and communities.
“We want people to know what their rights are," Campbell said. "We want to hold people accountable, and we want them to know we're fighting for them.”
Campbell said there’s an expectation for ICE and federal agents to maintain public safety without creating fear, which she believes they're disregarding.
“People should be entitled to be able to say, well, ‘Why are you detaining me and for what purpose?’ And so, they are looking to undermine due process," Campbell said. "Everyone should be concerned about that too, because at the end of the day, we all want due process.”
While it’s difficult for attorneys general to hold ICE accountable because the federal government has significant authority over immigration policy and enforcement, Campbell said her office is working to uphold Massachusetts state law.
“We will continue to show up and to fight back and demand transparency," Campbell said. "Demand that they abide by due process and constitutional values and most importantly, protect our children and protect our all of our communities to ensure that they are not living in fear.”
