SHREWSBURY, Mass. - New St. John's football coach Gary Senecal has been in the Army reserves for 13 years, he played in high school at the Pioneers rival St. Peter Marian for legendary coach Owen Kilcoyne, and he was on one of the biggest coaching names in college football today Bob Chesney's staff at Assumption for two years, he learned a ton from all of these experiences and brings them with him to the field every day. "What was the most appealing to me about the army when I was in my mid 20s when I joined," said Senecal, "was just being on a team and having being on a team that was working toward a purpose that was really meaningful so one of my goals as a coach is to try to get the kids to take that same mindset to get my coaches to take that same mindset. I've got a great coaching staff that feels a lot, the guys out here feel a lot like the guys that I deployed with. Just getting the players to understand that everything we do has a purpose, everything we do has intentionality and there has to be some basic level of camaraderie connection to what we're doing we have to support each other. We have to care more about we care more about each other than we do about ourselves.'
