SHREWSBURY, Mass. - One of Boston’s most famous actors is filming scenes for a new movie in Central Mass. Mark Wahlberg was seen on set at Flynn’s Truck Stop in Shrewsbury on Wednesday.
Wahlberg was working on a scene inside Flynn’s, it appears the younger person with him is playing his son.
A location manager said Wahlberg is playing a long-haul trucker who road trips around the country with his son to visit different NBA arenas.
Dozens of people stopped by to check out the scene in Shrewsbury during filming. The Apple Studio film crew did some interior filming in Flynn’s, they were also at Brody's Diner across Route 20, and staged a traffic jam on Grafton Street where Shrewsbury police diverted real traffic.
Movie fans and fans of Wahlberg said it’s always exciting when a big name comes to the area to make some movie magic happen.
“It's amazing. We don't have many stars from here, so it's always really cool when they come to town," Adrianna Wrubel said. "It's apparently about Mark Wahlberg, likes to go to a bunch of different arenas and stuff around the country with his son, who's apparently autistic in the movie. It looks good. I'm hoping it picks up soon, though. You know, we get to see a little bit more action.”
According to IMDB, the film will be called ‘Weekend Warriors” and LeBron James is listed as a producer.
There were some concerns about how the filming would impact traffic on Route 20, but things were going smoothly during the afternoon.
The new Wahlberg movie will be based on the German film “Weekend Rebels” about a similar father-son journey with Premier League soccer teams.
