WORCESTER, Mass. — The Worcester Railers have run their Skate to Success program in the city since 2017. Every Tuesday during the season, one or two schools in the city bus their fourth graders to the Worcester Ice Center, where the kids are set up with helmets, skates, and jerseys, and given a quick lesson before hitting the ice—many of them for the first time. The students have a blast. “The thing I like about skating is you can fall down, and you get back up,” said Thorndyke Road Elementary 4th grader, Mason Mon. “It's really funny to fall and stuff and once you get used to it, it's fun.” “It's just fun,” said Thorndyke Road Elementary 4th grader, Rebecca Mariano. “it's like an experience, a really fun experience.” The kids are then treated to a pizza party at the rink. It’s all free, sponsored by the Railers and UMass Memorial Health Care. Around 1,200 kids go through the program every year.
