Monday afternoon Worcester provided an update on the cleanup efforts throughout the city after a blizzard dropped over a foot of snow.
Mayor Joe Petty thanked the city's DPW workers, "he streets are passable here in the city for having the blizzard conditions and just set some expectations. We've had close to 13 inches of snow. We'll probably get another three or four inches before the storm is over. We're under blizzard warnings. So I just ask people to be patient. Not to go out if you don't have to. Stay out of the way of the plows."
Petty added Worcester Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, "the public schools will be closed tomorrow. I just want to thank everybody again. I want to thank MassDOT for their equipment that they brought here to the city of Worcester."
City Manager Eric Batista said that he has ordered municipal buildings closed Tuesday, "The crews are actively working. They haven't stopped. They've been actively working every single angle of the city and they're doing everything they can to make sure that these streets are passable and they're doing a great job. The 3-1-1 crew that's here answering the phones trying to manage all the calls that are coming in like the mayor said we have a lot of a lot of snow the city of Worcester we're going to be closing city hall libraries municipal buildings tomorrow we will be open for the public and the public meetings related to the city council meeting tomorrow night outside of that all municipal buildings for tomorrow we are asking all employees to work remote and do the best they can in this remote environment. We want people to stay off the roads and that gives the opportunity for the Department of Public Works to really be out there and move and clearing sidewalks, clearing the road best as possible so that the residents, as they go back to work, as they go back to their day to day, they'll be able to have a safe street."
Worcester DPW Commissioner John Westerling also thanked his DPW staff, "We've been working very hard, as was mentioned, since they arrived at 4 o'clock (Sunday night). We've been under general plowing since 10 p.m. last night. They've been working tirelessly and doing a very good job for the city, I have to say. Just for some numbers we had 292 private plows out last night. We had 65 city plows in addition to other snow removal equipment. We had Kaboatas out there, we had sidewalk machines out there, and also we had a number of vehicles from MassDOT, so we're grateful to them."
