It's been a busy couple of weeks at Worcester Regional Airport as April school vacation has brought extra flights and a lot of passengers. Airport Director Andy Davis, "We've been having an amazing two weeks of April with school vacation going on. We were blessed with JetBlue adding over 20 flights the last two weeks of April, and people have taken advantage of it. They're all going to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Fort Myers, and the planes are full. The planes are absolutely full going out."
This is the second year in a row that JetBlue has added flights from Worcester to its Florida destinations of Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers during the busy April travel season. Davis added that the flights are fuller than last year, "We had about an 84% load factor when these flights operated at the same time last year. The flights are averaging 94% load factor, so not only in addition to more seats, more planes, there are more passengers filling those planes."
A challenge for Massport during the influx of travelers has been parking. Davis said that all available areas are being utilized, "Parking has been a challenge, but a very good challenge. We're easily able to accommodate our customers. We have exceeded our parking capacity by 35%. We basically found alternate parking for over 300 cars, mostly along the curb, as you could see coming into the airport, but also some remote parking."
Delta and American Airlines also have flights out of Worcester. Delta to New York LaGuardia and American to Philadelphia. Davis said those flights have been doing well, "And people are also taking advantage of the connecting opportunities with Delta through LaGuardia and Philadelphia with American Airlines. I've talked to a few people. They were connecting to Little Rock, Arkansas, Des Moines, all kinds of secondary airports where you wouldn't even be able to get non-stops out of Boston. Approximately a year ago, Americans shifted their flight from JFK to their hub in Philadelphia. The passenger counts almost doubled. They went from basically less than 50% full to over 75% full on average. They've gone out several times jam-packed, especially this week with vacation." Davis said about Delta, "Similarly, Delta is doing extremely well. They do a lot of just point-to-point to LaGuardia for people that are just going as far as New York City."
