On June 2nd the Main South CDC celebrated the grand opening of the Main South Affordable Commercial Condominiums project. The project, located at 807 Main Street in the Main South neighborhood of Worcester, created six commercial condominiums on a former vacant lot. The commercial condominiums were sold on a "lease to own" basis. According to the Main South CDC release the units were sold "at discounted prices to local entrepreneurs and small business owners who will become engaged participants with an economic stake in the neighborhood’s continued revitalization." MassDevelopment provided more than $2.4 million in funding. Other funding was provided by the City of Worcester and UMass Memorial Health's Anchor Mission.
Katia Norford, President of the Main South Business Association spoke at the ground breaking, "Because of this project, business owners have the opportunity not just to rent space, but to build equity, create generational wealth and live and leave a lasting legacy for their families and future generations. This is especially meaningful because it is happening right here on Main South. A neighborhood rich on diversity, entrepreneurship, and community pride."
