STURBRIDGE, Mass. – A shooting suspect is dead, and a victim is recovering from a gunshot to the chest after a chaotic scene at a hotel located at 400 Haynes Street in Sturbridge. Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said a 28-year-old female allegedly drove her car into the Sturbridge Plaza Hotel early Thursday morning in search of two people known to her. Early said she also fired shots into the hotel, hitting a bystander in the lobby. Sturbridge police responded and said the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was eight months pregnant. The victim from the hotel lobby remains in critical but stable condition.
At a press conference with District Attorney Joe Early on Thursday afternoon, which can be seen in its entirety on this page, Sturbridge Police Chief Earl Dessert called it a stressful scene for his responding officers. “Because this incident unfolded so quickly, the town of Sturbridge was never in any danger,” he said. “We identified this and responded in about five minutes and the whole incident was over in 10 minutes.”
The incident remains under investigation.
