In 2024 the Nashoba Valley Medical Center closed after owner Steward Health Care filed for bankruptcy. In February 2027, the new UMass Memorial Medical Center at Nashoba Valley in Groton is scheduled to open to re-establish emergency room care in this part of Massachusetts.

At an event attended by Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Massachusetts Congresswoman Lori Trahan, UMass Memorial Medical Center President Justin Precourt spoke with Spectrum News on the soon to be open facility. Precourt, "This will be a full-service emergency department serving the local community situated right here in the town of Groton. We'll have 15 patient exam rooms, a CAT scan, x-ray, laboratory services, and ultrasound available. It really is everything that you would get from your local hospital emergency department minus the inpatient beds and the inpatient stay."

Precourt continued, "I think the other piece that's really important is it's 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we will treat every patient who comes in through the doors. Everybody will be treated, will be triaged and cared for who seeks care.

Precourt said the area fire departments and EMS services, mainly the Groton Fire Department, were key partners in the facility's development, "The local fire departments and EMS crews have been actually involved with us from the start. We've brought them through a number of times. We've met with them on a few different planning meetings and all the feedback we've gotten to date has been really positive. Chief Cheeks in particular for the town of Groton has kind of been right at our right hand throughout. We've run plans by him. We've done some planning meetings with him. We've worked with our local ambulance partners in the town. We're here to provide and help provide a service for them, and they're here to support us, and we view it as such, and I think we'll continue to collaborate together."
