WORCESTER, Mass. - The bright lights of UCLA are a long way from Lunenberg, Massachusetts and Worcester State University, where the Bruins director of athletic performance, Chris Grautski, grew up and played football before going on to coach strength and conditioning at WPI, Assumption and Holy Cross, all in Worcester, Massachusetts. And it's still a job that Grautski loves.
"Yeah, it's a blast," said Grautski, "like I've not worked one day in my life, now it's time consuming, right, like we put a lot of time and effort into, you know, getting our team to perform at the highest level possible."
With UCLA undefeated ranked 12th in the country and coming off their first win over Oregon on the road since 2004, the Bruins are definitely reaching their potential.
"That's what we're seeing right now is an entire offseason's worth of work, you know, getting them to believe that they are capable of doing great things."
But for Grautski, it's not all about victories on Saturday afternoons.
"The end goal is to win as many games as humanly possible while making the team better young men and understanding that being a well rounded individual is huge."
Chris Grautski and UCLA head coach Bob Chesney have worked together for 13 of the last 14 seasons, it's a partnership as well as a friendship.
"We know how to push each other's buttons and get the most out of each other and I think we're both just relentless at the pursuit of better."
It's not just the players that are excited about UCLA's success, the fan base is pumped as well.
"LA loves a winner, so we're giving them what they, you know, yearn for."
And if you follow Chris Grautski's career from the small town of Lunenburg to four different colleges in Worcester, Massachusetts, and now to LA, winner is a good way to describe him.
