Election Day is four weeks away, and while the battle for control of Congress has grabbed the spotlight, there are a surprising number of competitive races for governor across the U.S.

Voters in at least 12 states face tight races for governor. The Cook Political Report has labeled four governor races as "lean Democrat" and three as "lean Republican."

If those projections are accurate, Iowa would be a possible flip for Democrats, while Kansas could potentially flip for Republicans. There are five races considered toss-ups, including Wisconsin, currently held by a Democratic governor, and Alaska, Georgia, Ohio and Nevada — all states held by Republican governors.

Republicans have the opportunity to flip five governorships, while Democrats can flip as many as seven.

Todd Belt, of George Washington University, said the president's lagging poll numbers are helping Democrats to compete, even in historically red states. In Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton — the former state health director — is looking to break a 15-year drought for Democrats by facing off against Republican tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

In Georgia, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, a Democrat, is running against Republican healthcare executive Rick Jackson. Republicans have held a trifecta of control in Georgia for more than two decades.

"Most people, when they do vote, vote straight ticket. It's between 80 and 90% on any given election. So if they're going to be registering their disaffection with Donald Trump, they're going to be doing it all the way down the ballot with Democrats," Belt said.

Other toss-ups for governor include races in Alaska and Nevada, where Democrats are hoping to flip the state blue. Republicans are trying to go on the offensive in the swing state of Wisconsin, where a Democratic governor is leaving office.

In the Wisconsin race, Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany is going against Democrat David Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive.

Even Texas seems to have a competitive governor's race — three-term Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is locked in a tight matchup in a state that hasn't had a democrat governor since the early 90s.
