HERMON — E-commerce giant Amazon now owns the site of the former Bangor Drive-In on Hammond Street in Hermon.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the sale.
“We have closed on this property and continue to partner with Hermon as we move through the planning process,” said Amber Plunkett. “We're excited to work with the community as next steps are finalized and will share more as it becomes available.”
The Hermon Planning Board approved a site plan for a proposed warehouse and distribution facility on the property last year, and construction vehicles could be seen working on site Wednesday.
Some locals we spoke with said they are hopeful about the change.
“Anything in these small communities is a benefit,” said Hermon resident Elaine MacDonald. “It is a good use of the space, and it should create some jobs. It’s a warehouse.”
Several individuals we spoke with agreed, saying they believe the change will benefit the region.
“I think anything that brings progress to rural Maine and creates jobs is a great thing,” said Levant resident Henry Jenkins. “We need more of it.”
However, others shared mixed feelings.
“I like the trees and stuff like that for the wildlife,” said Levant resident Scott Goodine. “But you’re not going to stop progress, I guess. Everybody buys online.”
And some shared concerns about competition with existing delivery services.
“I’d rather have the volume coming to U.P.S. That’s where I work,” said Carmel resident Jon Goodness. “So, I’m not really thrilled about it myself.”
Tax records show the approximately 20-acre property was purchased for $1.9 million, more than three times the fair market value, and lists the seller as Stars JC LLC.
Hermon town officials declined to be interviewed.
Amazon has already opened a shipping hub in Caribou, with plans for more in Gorham and Waterville.
