AUGUSTA — A program designed to help renters avoid eviction is now open to new applications.

The Maine Eviction Prevention Program offers up to $9,600 to eligible households, according to MaineHousing and Project Home.

“When a household has fallen behind on rent, getting the right assistance at the right time can make the difference between losing a home and regaining stability,” Project Home Executive Director Victoria Morales said in a statement.

To qualify, households must be renters in Maine, be at risk of eviction, owe no more than $9,600 and have household income at or below 60% of area median income.

Also, landlord participation is required. If payments are awarded, they are made directly to the landlord.

The program is supported by a one-time, $11 million allocation from the state. Applications will close when the funds are committed, according to MaineHousing.
