ELLSWORTH — Convicted sex offender and former gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler has been accused of violating his probation once again.
According to court records, Cutler is accused of keeping encrypted files on an electronic device and failing to disclose the correct password to open them.
That’s according to a motion filed by Cutler’s probation officer Sam Payson on April 21.
“Mr. Cutler denies the alleged probation violation,” Cutler’s attorney Walter McKee told Spectrum News in a statement.
Payson recommended that Cutler’s bail be revoked.
“This is another example of Mr. Cutler demonstrating that he has no intent of following his ordered conditions,” Payson wrote in a recommendation on April 21. “It is obvious that he does not intend on following his probation conditions or rules set forth by the court. Therefore, probation will not be a benefit.”
Cutler was originally convicted of possessing child pornography in 2023 and served roughly 8 months in jail before being released early for good behavior. This latest charge marks Cutler’s fifth alleged violation since his release.
Cutler has been in jail since he was arrested in February for one of the previous alleged violations. A judge denied his request for bail earlier this month.
In 2010, Cutler narrowly lost to Republican Paul LePage by less than 8,000 votes in a four-way race.
He ran again in 2014, coming in at a distant third behind LePage and then-Rep. Mike Michaud, a Democrat. LePage was reelected.
Years prior, Cutler worked for Sen. Edmund Muskie and then for the Carter administration.
Cutler is scheduled to appear in court again on May 15.
