AUGUSTA — The Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns Mainers that ticks can still be active in the state as October approaches.
“Many people think ticks are only a summer problem, but ticks can remain active throughout the fall,” said Maine CDC Director Puthiery Va.
Tick bites can spread several diseases, most notably Lyme disease. A recent Maine CDC statement showed that so far this year, health care providers in Maine have reported more than 5,000 cases of tickborne diseases.
The statement indicated ticks can be active anytime temperatures are above freezing, no matter what time of year. They can live in heavily wooded or brushy areas, and also where leaf litter accumulates.
Va’s message to Mainers was not to stay indoors, but to exercise caution and remain alert.
“You can enjoy Maine’s beautiful fall weather and outdoor activities while staying safe by taking a few simple steps before, during, and after can help protect you from tickborne disease,” Va said.
Among other recommendations, Va and Maine CDC suggested Mainers remember to use an EPA-approved insect repellent. Cover exposed skin with long sleeves and pants, and know where ticks are likely to be in your surroundings. After being outside, experts suggest examining everyone – including yourself, children, and pets – and consider showering as a good practice.
