AUGUSTA — A silent film that premiered at the Augusta Colonial Theater in the 1920s will return to the theater Saturday after being lost for more than a century.

“In the River,” a film by Augusta producer and director Edgar Jones, tells the story of a mail-order bride who travels to Maine to meet her prospective husband but runs into trouble along the way.

The film stars Jones, Evelyn Brent and Cartlon Brickert. Scenes feature the Kennebec River in Augusta and the Cobbosseecontee Stream in Gardiner.

The film premiered at the Colonial Theater on Aug. 12, 1920, but then disappeared. It wasn’t until Ed Lorusso, a local film restoration expert in Belgrade, found that “In the River” was mislabeled at the Library of Congress under the wrong title.

“[Augusta] was a major film center of that period,” said Lorusso.

“In the River” returns to the big screen at the Augusta Colonial Theater on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. Two other short films by Jones, “Cupid, Registered Guide” and “Caught in the Rapids,” will be screened as well.

There will be live music accompanying the silent films.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Augusta Colonial Theater’s website.
