Maine State Police said this week that they now have a suspect in a 29-year-old cold case murder from Kittery and are seeking the public’s help in the investigation.

Maxine Bitomski, 73, was found dead in her Colonial Road home on Jan. 16, 1993, by her grandson. There are few details publicly available about the manner of her death, but police and the Maine chief medical examiner at the time described the case as a homicide. She lived alone and the case has remained unsolved for nearly three decades.

On Thursday, Maine State Police Lt. Scott Gosselin held a press conference in Kittery where he announced new developments.

“The advantage that time has given us has made it possible for advances in DNA and forensic sciences technology to catch up to where they can be helpful in this case. This overall effort has allowed us to identify and interview a suspect but it has not yet led to an arrest or formal charges,” Gosselin told reporters.

Gosselin declined to provide details on the case or to identify the suspect, but said he is calling on the public to provide any information that might help police in their ongoing investigation.

“We ask that you do not wait for us to seek you out, especially if you have first-hand information, and do not assume that we know you have information. If you are contemplating whether or not what you have is worth sharing, then we are speaking directly to you,” Gosselin said.

Gosselin said anyone with information to share may call the Maine State Police at 207-624-7076.
