AUGUSTA – Maine flu cases are still declining after a peak in mid-February, according to data from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The latest numbers, which cover the week ending March 29, show outpatient health care visits are on the decline. Expressed as a percentage, the figure is now 3.74%.
That number is higher than the baseline figure of around 2%, where Maine was at this time last year, but Maine CDC data shows a continuing downward trend from the season’s peak in mid-February six weeks ago.
Flu-related hospitalizations are showing a similar trend. According to Maine CDC, there were 36 reported hospitalizations for the week ending March 29, which also appears to be the lowest number since the peak in mid-February.
There have been a total of 89 reported deaths since the current flu season began in October, but none reported in the week of March 29.
According to Maine CDC’s county map of the state, only three counties – Aroostook, Lincoln and Oxford – reported “moderate” severity of the disease. All other counties were listed as “Low.”
