AUGUSTA — Fewer than one-third of Mainers want Congress to pass President Donald Trump’s signature legislation, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” according to the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.
The poll conducted earlier this month shows 58% of Mainers want Congress to block the bill, with 30% supporting passage and 12% either unsure or neutral.
The Pine Tree State Poll has a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points and compiled answers from 846 completed surveys.
Pollsters also quizzed respondents on projections that the “big, beautiful bill” would increase the federal deficit by about $2.8 trillion over the next 10 years. On that question, 92% of Mainers say they are very or somewhat concerned about increasing federal debt.
The bill seeks to extend tax cuts passed in 2017 and proposes new work requirements for Medicaid, which is expected to result in about 50,000 Mainers losing health insurance through the program. The bill also cuts clean energy subsidies and makes other spending reductions on social service programs.
Trump has said he wants it on his desk by July 4.
When asked about how Trump is handling the job of president, 60% of Mainers disapprove and 40% approve.
The poll asked about Elon Musk’s efforts to reduce the size of the federal government. More than half — 57% — say the government efficiency department had a negative impact on the federal government, with 34% saying it’s been positive. The rest say it’s had little impact or were unsure.
On the issue of immigration, 54% of Mainers say it’s inappropriate for the National Guard to enforce immigration laws in the U.S., while 43% say it’s appropriate.
