AUGUSTA — State Auditor Matt Dunlap won the Democratic primary for the 2nd Congressional District, setting up a fall contest against former Republican Gov. Paul LePage.
Dunlap defeated three other candidates in the race that was decided following a ranked choice vote count.
On election night, state Sen. Joe Baldacci led with 32%, followed by Dunlap at 29%, Jordan Wood at 29% and Paige Loud at 10%.
Following the ranked choice count, Dunlap won the race followed by Baldacci.
The seat is open following the surprise decision in November by U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, a Democrat, not to seek reelection.
In a statement, Dunlap said he’s ready to take on LePage.
“Together, we’re going to defeat Paul LePage one more time and make sure he’s never on the ballot again,” Dunlap said. “While we’re at it, we’re going to fight to advance policies that will actually help Mainers — like Medicare for All, affordable childcare, a lower cost of living, and stopping this illegal war in Iran.”
The National Republican Campaign Committee stood up for LePage, calling him “a proven fighter for Maine families” while describing Dunlap as an “incompetent radical.”
LePage, a two-term governor, faced no primary opponent. Republicans see the seat as a key pickup opportunity as they battle to maintain control of the House.
In the past three presidential elections, the district has voted for President Donald Trump.
