The suspect wanted in connection with Wednesday’s shooting at the Maine Mall in South Portland has been arrested.

Ahmed Basheer Awad, 20, of Westbrook turned himself in at the Cumberland County Jail Thursday at 3:30 p.m., according to South Portland Police.

Awad “wanted to turn himself in to police so there could be a safe and peaceful resolution for all involved,” police stated. “South Portland Detectives worked with Awad, through a third party, to accomplish this.”

Awad has been charged with elevated aggravated assault Class A, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon Class C and carrying a concealed weapon or threatening display of a weapon by a person under 21, a class D crime.

Class A crimes are punishable by up to 30 years incarceration and a $50,000 fine; Class C crimes are punishable by up to five years incarceration and a $5,000 fine; Class D crimes are punishable by up to 364 days incarceration and a $2,000 fine

Awad is being held on $100,000 cash bail pending his arraignment, scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday.

Awad allegedly shot a man in his late 20s in the leg in the Maine Mall’s food court Wednesday afternoon, causing shoppers to flee, the mall to go into a lockdown, and law enforcement swarming the area.

Awad then allegedly fled through the food court’s exit/entrance.

The victim underwent surgery and is doing well, according to police.

Police say they have not recovered the firearm.
