Police on Saturday released details as to the circumstances behind an incident in Windham where one man was shot to death and the suspect dead by suicide.

On Friday, police were alerted to the shooting at the intersection of Route 302 and Landing Road in Windham shortly before 2 p.m., according to State Police Lt. Aaron M. Turcotte.

James Ford, 48, of Windham, was driving a silver sedan when he pulled up next to a motorcycle driven by Erin Hayne, 33, of Casco, according to Turcotte.

Ford “then pointed a firearm from the vehicle and fired numerous shots at Hayne,” Turcotte said.

“Witnesses in a U-Haul truck began to follow the shooter’s vehicle while calling 911, providing the license plate to dispatchers,” Turcotte said. “The U-Haul eventually lost sight of the vehicle near the Raymond/Windham town line.”

Back at the intersection, witnesses including a game warden found Hayne suffering from gunshot wounds and began life-saving measures. Hayne was eventually pronounced dead by members of the Windham Fire Department, according to Turcotte.

North Windham and parts of Raymond went into lockdown for about six hours following the shooting.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office deputies found Ford’s unoccupied car behind the Dunkin’ on Route 302 in Raymond.

“The area was secured, and a perimeter was established,” Turcotte said. “The Maine State Police Tactical Team conducted a K9 track and located the suspect’s body.”

An autopsy revealed that Ford was killed by a single gunshot wound and his death was ruled a suicide, according to Turcotte.

Ford had left his apartment in Windham shortly before the shooting, according to Turcotte. He lived alone, and he was the only occupant in his car at the time of the shooting.

“The investigation is still ongoing, and there is no known connection between Hayne and Ford,” Turcotte said.

Anyone with information about the shooting, or who was traveling on Route 302 at the time of the shooting and may have video, is asked to contact state police.
