One person is believed to have died in a fire Wednesday in Benton, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The state fire marshal’s office was called to a home at 70 Pleasant Drive shortly after 2 a.m., according to department spokesperson Shannon Moss.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-family residence that was fully involved,” Moss said. “Suppression efforts brought the fire under control, though Pleasant Street was temporarily closed to allow for emergency operations.”

Firefighters found a deceased person inside the residence as they were extinguishing the blaze, according to Moss.

The body has been taken to the chief medical examiner’s office in Augusta to determine the cause of death and for identification.

A dog was also found deceased inside the home.

Fairfield-Benton Fire Rescue was aided by departments from Waterville, Albion, Clinton, Skowhegan and Oakland.

“The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” Moss said. “No further information is available at this time.”
