Firefighters discovered a body outside a burning building in Sumner on Wednesday, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Sumner Fire Department was dispatched to a residence on Valley Road at about 5 p.m., after a caller saw the fire from a distance, according to public safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

“Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a deceased adult male outside of the structure,” Moss said.

The Maine State Fire Marshal's Office is working with the chief medical examiner’s office to identify the body.

“The residence, which was powered solely by propane and solar energy, was found to be a total loss,” Moss said.

The home was difficult to reach because of its “off-grid location,” Moss said.

First responders traveled a mile in all-terrain vehicles and four-wheel drive pickup trucks to reach the fire.

The fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the blaze. Officials are not releasing further details.
