TREMONT — The two adults found dead in Tremont earlier this week have been identified, and their deaths have been ruled a murder-suicide.
On Tuesday, just before 9 a.m., Southwest Harbor Police responded to a 911 call about an incident near the Big Rocks Road in Tremont. Police say the caller reported finding two deceased adults at the scene.
Authorities say members of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North responded and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths in coordination with Southwest Harbor Police.
The deceased were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta.
According to the Maine State Police, autopsies led investigators to believe that the deceased found near Big Rocks Road are married couple 78-year-old Jyoti Hawley and 75-year-old William Hawley, both of Tremont.
Officials say the cause of death was determined to be gunshot wounds for both people. Jyoti’s manner of death was ruled a homicide, and William's death was found to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Maine State Police believe this was an isolated incident with no ongoing public safety concerns.
