AUGUSTA — A California congressman is endorsing State Auditor Matt Dunlap in the 2nd Congressional District Democratic primary.

“Matt is a progressive champion,” U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna said in a video statement. “He supports Medicare for all, he supports taxing billionaires, he supports free public college, and he supports stopping this war in Iran and holding the Epstein class accountable.”

Khanna, a Democrat who represents a Silicon Valley district, is a frequent cable television guest who focuses on progressive priorities.

The endorsement comes with about 10 weeks to go until the June 9 primary in which Dunlap faces state Sen. Joe Baldacci, former congressional staffer Jordan Wood and Paige Loud, a social worker from Old Town.

In a statement, Dunlap described Khanna as “one of the strongest progressive voices in Congress.”

“Ro knows what it takes to fight for working people against powerful interests — and that’s exactly what I’ve done my entire career here in Maine,” Dunlap said. “I’ll bring that same fight to Congress — from passing the Sanders-Khanna billionaire’s tax to lowering costs for families in the Second District.”

The winner of the primary will face former two-term Republican Gov. Paul LePage in November.
