A resident was killed Friday in a house fire in Readfield, according to Shannon Moss of the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Readfield Fire Department responded to the fire at 421 Plains Road shortly before 10 p.m.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found the residence heavily involved in fire,” Moss said.
Jerrold Wentworth, 74, was able to escape out of a second floor window, according to Moss.
“Mr. Wentworth advised firefighters that his wife, 75-year-old Carolyn Wentworth, remained inside the home on the second floor,” Moss said. “Due to heavy fire conditions, firefighters were unable to make entry to attempt a rescue.”
State Fire Marshal Office investigators found the victim in the debris at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday, near where she was sleeping.
Jerrold Wentworth was listed in serious condition at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta, according to Moss.
The fire is under investigation.
