A Whiting man was killed over the weekend in a crash that occurred after he allegedly threatened people at a bar and fled from police, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Department spokesperson Shannon Moss says state police were notified of the deadly crash at 12:48 a.m. on Charlotte Road in Charlotte.

Robert Boggia Jr., 40, of Whiting had been at a Calais bar where he allegedly threatened people with a firearm, according to Moss. He fled before police arrived.

Boggia was later seen in Calais on Route 1 allegedly driving a red Corvette at about 150 mph, Moss said.

Baileyville police were unable to catch up with Boggia.

The Corvette then allegedly sped by a Washington County sheriff’s deputy on Charlotte Road, Moss said. The deputy attempted to catch up with Bogia before the Corvette crashed.

“Boggia was ejected from the vehicle and was located a significant distance from the crashed vehicle,” Moss stated. “High speed was the largest contribution to the crash.”

Charlotte Road was closed around the crash area for several hours.

An investigation is ongoing and toxicology reports are pending, according to Moss.
