A lightning strike was likely the culprit of a Litchfield house fire, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The fire marshal was called Thursday to the fire at 1859 Hallowell Road to assist with the investigation, according to State Police Maj. Aaron M. Turcotte.

“Litchfield fire personnel encountered two separate fires within the residence and quickly initiated suppression operations,” Turcotte stated. “The family living in the home safely escaped and called 911. No injuries were reported.”

Investigators found the fires were associated with severe thunderstorms that had passed through the area, “and a possible lightning strike that energized the residence,” according to Turcotte.

“The Office of State Fire Marshal reminds residents that lightning can travel through electrical wiring, plumbing, and other conductive systems in a home,” Turcotte stated. “During severe thunderstorms, residents should avoid contact with electrical equipment and plumbing and remain indoors until the storm has safely passed.”
