BANGOR — The city of Bangor is ending its longstanding ban on overnight winter parking following an ordinance change.
For years, Bangor has prohibited overnight street parking during the winter to allow for snow removal.
“A change to the City’s zoning ordinance reduced the number of off-street parking spaces required for certain dwellings, prompting a review of winter parking regulations,” the announcement from the city reads, in part. “As a result, the updated winter parking policy now aligns with on-street parking rules in place throughout the rest of the year.”
This means that on even-numbered days, people can park overnight on the side of the road with even-numbered addresses.
And on odd-numbered days, they can park on the side with odd-numbered addresses.
Vehicles must still be moved during any city-wide parking ban.
“When a heavy snowfall occurs, public works is busy clearing and sanding roads, and a parking ban can be necessary to assist in that effort,” the announcement goes on to add.
According to the city, a no parking alert will be sent out through the city’s mass alert system when public works needs to clear snow outside of the Downtown Parking Management District.
During a city-wide parking ban, several municipal lots will be available.
